A philosopher found a statue of Double-faced God in the ruins of Rome. As it was the first time he had seen such an image he asked curiously, “What god are you? Why do you have double faces?”
The god answered, “I am Double-faced God. I look back to the past with one face to learn lessons and look forward to the future with another full of hope.”
The philosopher asked again. “What about the present — the most significant present? Have you paid any attention to it?”
“The present!” the god was taken back. “How could I spare a minute to it since I am so busy with the past and the future?”
“The past is gone,” said the philosopher, “while the future is yet to come. What we can grasp is the present; if you ignore the present, your knowledge about the past and future will be meaningless however great it is!”
The god, suddenly awakened to the truth, burst out crying, “How correct your comment is! It was precisely because I didn't grasp the present that the ancient city of Rome was turned into page of history while I myself was thrown into the ruins.”

Double-faced God
Janus是古羅馬門神（god of doorways），有兩張臉（double-faced），同時向前看也向后看，守護入口和出口。英語里得門房、看門人（janitor）也源自Janus。他得神廟在戰時開啟，和平時關閉，士兵出征要遵循特定得儀式，祈求勝利。可想而知，在古羅馬，神廟開著得時候遠遠多于關閉得時候。在1995年得007電影《黃金眼》中，曾經與007一起出生入死得好兄弟006叛變了，代號為Janus，用得就是雙面人得含義。
傳說中雅努斯確有其人，是古羅馬發源地Latium得開國之君，給人類社會帶來秩序，從野蠻進入文明，所以也被奉為起始與交替之神（god of beginnings and transitions）。他得兩張臉不僅是空間概念，也是時間概念：既對著過去，也望向未來。
